While it fails to live up the admittedly ridiculous hype surrounding it, there are moments of amazingness sprinkled throughout that well justify its existence. The writing gets meandering at times, not as crisp and dense as I would like it to be, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons having been the last fantasy books I had read prior to picking up this one, but when said writing improves, the momentum really builds. The story-within-a-story format is an unsettling but interesting schtick that takes some getting used to. If not for sky-high expectations due to prior reading experiences and the lack of tight writing to which I've become accustomed, The Name of the Wind would deserve full marks.
